Dear Friends,
I am only one, but I am one: I cannot do everything but I can do something What I can do, I ought to do And what I ought to do By the grace of God, I will do.
-Helen Keller
Do you have an hour to spare today? The truth is most of you will probably say no. As Furman students, it is normal to weigh ourselves down with classes, studies, jobs, research, clubs, and organizations. ‘Stressed-out’ is the norm. I know it has been for me. In fact, I first became involved in the Heller Service Corps because I was feeling overwhelmed with everything else. In doing so, it was easy to me to become self-absorbed as I rushed to fill one obligation after another.
Taking just an hour or two out of my week to give back to the community did wonders for me. Though I was adding another commitment to my schedule, I felt as though I had more time. It is amazing what giving one or two hours of your own time can do for your perspective. I returned to campus after my service activities (I volunteered with the children at the Meyer Center) feeling relaxed and rejuvenated, with a renewed sense of what is important.
This year, I urge you to give giving back a try. So often we make the mistake of believing that volunteering is only about what we can offer someone else. Getting involved in the Greenville community is a fabulous way to share the many gifts we are fortunate enough to have, but we can also gain so much by giving back so little-perhaps just an hour of our time.
Please contact us to take advantage of the amazing opportunity you have to share your gifts. The Heller Service Corps is designed to offer each member of the Furman community a way to get involved in an area they feel passionate about. With over 30 partner organizations around Greenville, it’s easy to do so!
Sincerely,
